Biography

Born in 1793 at Lenton Priory, Nottingham, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the 68 Regiment in June 1812. At the battle of Vittoria on 21 June 1813, he was severely wounded by two musket balls. The first in the right hip was removed within days. The second entered his groin, passed up his body and lodged by his spine. This ball, which caused severe pain, was not found and removed until 1869. After Vittoria, he remained in the Army serving with the 64 and 40 Regiments and the Nottingham Militia. Severus Stretton retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and died in 1884.
